2024 Sampler Blanket CAL | ZigZag Joining Method

CWT Week 4 of 2024 Sampler Blanket CAL

THE ZIGZAG JOINING METHOD

We've reached an exciting phase in our blanket project journey: it's time to join all those beautiful squares together! For this project, I've chosen a zigzag joining method that not only brings our diverse stitches together but also adds a touch of visual charm to the finished piece.

Why ZigZag?

Choosing the right joining method is crucial when you have a variety of stitches and textures like we do in this blanket. The zigzag method allows us to seamlessly marry these squares while creating a visually appealing pattern along the seams. It adds a unique twist that enhances the overall look of the blanket.

Benefits of Zigzag Joining

  • Versatility: Works well with different stitch patterns and yarn weights.

  • Strength: Creates a sturdy seam that holds up over time.

  • Aesthetics: Adds a decorative element to your blanket, making the joining process as beautiful as the squares themselves.

YARN SELECTION

For this project, we will continue using our favorite yarn, Cascade Yarns 220 Superwash Merino. This yarn is ideal due to its beautiful shine, soft texture, and the convenience of being machine washable, making it perfect for a project that will be well-loved.

Color Choice: For this join, we're using color #02/ Tuffet. This is a Soft Beige color that brings all of these colors down to Earth with a more mellow vibe.

PREPPING PROJECT

Begin by arranging the squares how you want the blanket to be assembled.

Try to lock the squares into place so they do not move.  It’s ok if some squares are closer than others or even different sizes.

Focus on the outside of the blanket making a flat edge.

JOINING VERTICALLY

sl st in the middle st of the corner of one square, ch 3, sl st in the middle st of the corner of the next square you are joining.

Ch 3, go back to square 1, angle the ch to have a slant or diagonal line, find a stitch that your crochet hook matches up with, sl st in that st.

Repeat ch 3, sl st in the opposite square in the st that the slant matches up with.

The number of sts between each sl st does NOT matter!  Focus on the squares alignment.

When you reach the end of joining 2 squares, bring down the next 2 squares.

Continue the zig zag diagonal ch 3 join to the bottom corner of the diagonal square.  Ch 3, sl st in the corner of the next square and continue pattern joining the next 2 squares together.

Once you reach the end of joining the last 2 squares, close the last 2 corners together with a ch 3.

JOINING HORIZONTALLY

sl st in the middle st of the corner of one square, ch 3, sl st in the middle st of the corner of the next square you are joining.

Ch 3, go back to square 1, angle the ch to have a slant or diagonal line, find a stitch that your crochet hook matches up with, sl st in that st.

The number of sts between each sl st

does NOT matter! Focus on the squares alignment.

Repeat ch 3, sl st in the opposite square in the st that the slant matches up with.

When you reach the end of joining 2 squares, end joining these 2 squares with a ch 3 between the 2 corners, then ch 3 and cross the vertical join to form an X shape.

Continue the zig zag diagonal ch 3 join to the bottom corner of the diagonal square.  Ch 3, sl st in the corner of the next open corner and continue pattern joining the next 2 squares together.

Once you reach the end of the last squares, close the last 2 corners together with a ch 3.

Repeat To Join All Squares Together.
