Welcome to the start of an exciting crochet journey! This series will guide you through various crochet stitches designed for the year-long Temperature-Sampler Blanket project. This month, we focus on the Alternate Stitch. Whether you are experienced or new to crochet, this project provides a fun way to track temperature changes throughout the year while crafting a stunning blanket.
As the temperatures shift, your chosen colors will reflect the seasons, transforming your blanket into a beautiful visual diary. In this post, you will find everything you need to get started: materials, stitch instructions, and tips to stay motivated along the way.
Gathering Your Materials
Before you begin stitching, it is important to collect your materials. Here’s a comprehensive list of what you will need:
Yarn: Choose a variety of colors to represent different temperature ranges. For instance, you might use a palette of blues for chilly temperatures and warmer shades like yellow and red for higher temps.
For this project I am recommending using a yarn that is a size 3 weight/ DK to help minimize the overall length of the final project.
Crochet Hook: Select a hook that matches your yarn weight. A G/6-4mm hook is standard for DK weight yarn.
Scissors: Essential for cutting your yarn during color changes.
Tapestry Needle: Important for weaving in yarn ends once your square is completed.
Stitch Marker: Helps mark the beginning of each row.
Printable Calendar Stitch Card: This tool is useful for tracking daily temperatures and matching them to yarn colors.
I will provide a Free Printable Calendar Stitch Card to assist you in tracking current temperatures during this project.
The Joy of the Alternate Stitch
The Alternate Stitch is an enjoyable technique that adds texture while remaining easy to learn. It is ideal for beginning this year-long project, as it produces a beautiful pattern quickly.
This stitch is a one row repeat pattern that includes double crochet and single crochet stitches, creating lovely depth without complexity. It offers enough flexibility to adapt for different yarn weights and colors, allowing for creativity in your blanket.
Step-by-Step Instructions for the Alternate Stitch
Here’s a straightforward guide on how to crochet the Alternate Stitch: (Multiple of 2 + 1)
Foundation Row: Begin By Chaining 211
Row 1: sc in the second chain from your hook and in each
ch across. (Total 210)
Row 2: ch 1, turn, sk first st, (sc, dc) in the next st,
sk next st, (sc, dc) in the next st.
Repeat to across row.
Ending row with (sc,dc) in last st.
Row 3: ch 1, turn, (sc, dc) in each dc across. (Total 212 sts)
*Repeat Row 3 for pattern. Every row will end with one sc stitch left blank to keep sides straight.
Repeat Row 3 every day for the month of January.
Success Tips for the Alternate Stitch
Maintain Even Tension: Experiment to find a comfortable tension that results in a consistent fabric.
Utilize a Row Counter: Tracking your rows helps ensure consistency in the dimensions of your blanket.
Practice with a Swatch: If you are new to this stitch, create a small swatch first to get comfortable before diving into the project.
Weave in Ends Regularly: Use your tapestry needle to weave in the ends after finishing each section; it is less daunting than tackling all ends at once!

Temperature Yarn Color Gauge
To give your blanket a personal touch, establish your temperature ranges and matching yarn colors. Below is a suggested gauge:
Freezing (32°F and below): Blue
Cold (33°F - 50°F): Light Blue
Cool (51°F - 65°F): Green
Mild (66°F - 75°F): Yellow
Warm (76°F - 85°F): Orange
Hot (86°F and above): Red
This gauge allows you to create a striking representation of temperature changes throughout the year. Feel free to adjust the colors according to your taste!
