February Crochet Stitch of the Month: Twisted Single Crochet Stitch

Writer's picture: Tiffany HansenTiffany Hansen

Welcome back, crochet friends! It’s time to dive into February’s Stitch of the Month for our 2025 Temperature-Sampler Blanket Crochet Along. I hope you’re loving the journey so far and are as excited as I am to introduce you to a fun new technique: the Twisted Single Crochet Stitch. This stitch is simple, unique, and will add a delightful texture to your blanket, keeping the project fresh and interesting!

Gathering Your Materials

The materials for February remain the same as January’s:

  • Yarn: Choose a variety of colors to represent different temperature ranges. For instance, you might use a palette of blues for chilly temperatures and warmer shades like yellow and red for higher temps.

    • For this project I am recommending using a yarn that is a size 3 weight/ DK to help minimize the overall length of the final project.

  • Crochet Hook: Select a hook that matches your yarn weight. A G/6-4mm hook is standard for DK weight yarn.

  • Scissors: Essential for cutting your yarn during color changes.

  • Yarn Needle: Important for weaving in yarn ends once your square is completed.

  • Stitch Marker: Helps mark the beginning of each row.

  • Printable Calendar Stitch Card: This tool is useful for tracking daily temperatures and matching them to yarn colors.

If you’re new to the project, check out the January tutorial and set up your Temperature Gauge. It’s never too late to join in!

The Plot Twist Of The Twisted Single Crochet Stitch

What is the Twisted Single Crochet Stitch?

The Twisted Single Crochet Stitch is a little plot twist for your hook—literally! While it’s built on the foundation of a standard single crochet, the way you insert your hook into the stitch and pull the yarn through makes it feel completely different. At first, it might seem a bit tricky or abnormal, but that’s part of the fun! This stitch encourages you to slow down, focus, and enjoy the process.

Once you get into the rhythm, the Twisted Single Crochet Stitch becomes a relaxing and meditative technique. It’s perfect for testing the comfort zones of more experienced crocheters while still being approachable and enjoyable for beginners. Plus, it’s versatile enough to be worked with any number of stitches, making it an excellent addition to your crochet toolbox.

Step-by-Step Instructions for adding the TWISTED SINGLE CROCHET STITCH to our Temperature Blanket

This stitch is worked with any number of stitches.

  1. Row 1: ch 1, turn, make one twisted sc st in each st.

  2. Row 2:  ch 1, turn, make one regular sc in each st.

  3. Repeat Rows 1 & 2 for pattern.

Twisted Sc Instructions -insert the hook from the back to the front into the st

(the hook goes under both loops with the working yarn BEHIND the hook)

Draw the working yarn through and then pull it out to the height of the working loop.  Yarn over and then pull through both loops on hook.

Tips for Success:

Here are a few tips to make the Twisted Single Crochet Stitch a breeze:

  1. Go Slow at First: The technique may feel a little awkward initially, but take your time. You’ll build muscle memory quickly.

  2. Embrace the Texture: This stitch adds beautiful texture to your blanket, making it stand out from previous rows.

  3. Substitute If Needed: If you find this stitch too challenging, it’s perfectly fine to substitute it with a regular single crochet stitch. The goal is to enjoy the process!
